Thor's Fishing TripThor's Fishing Trip
by Marianne Mathiasen
The story of Thor's fishing trip is one of the most popular stories in Norse mythology. In 2010, I did this nine panel comic page featuring this story. My goal with this page was to tell a story without a single word. Thor's fishing trip, is the story about how Thor as a young man (God), one day asks the giant Hymir if they can go on a fishing trip to capture the sea serpent Jarmungand. Hymir isn't too thrilled to bring Thor on fishing trip like that, and warns him of the danger they might endure in order to capture a monster like Jarmungand. Thor insists on coming, and gets himself an ox head as fishing bait. Together they sail out at the open sea. Thor keeps insisting on them sailing further away from land to make sure they will be able to capture the monster. A storm blows up, and at the same time the sea serpent, is hooked on the bait. The monster is so strong, that it's nearly sinks the boat! Hymir gets scarred and cuts the ox head of the line, to let the monster go.
