  • Lamp-Fever
    by Shannon Wolff

It's so dull being stuck in a lamp both night and day
There's nothing to do and that's just not okay
I'm loosing my mind to boredom, going crazy, I say
I've tried everything to keep busy, least my sanity I mislay

I tied my fingers in knots attempting macramé
And was simply dreadful at papier-mâché
Found myself lacking words when I tried to write an essay
And nearly broke my neck trying to learn ballet

Any and everything to keep my wits from going astray
And, really, being stuck in a lamp; is there anything more cliché?
I, for one, would much rather be in Bombay
Maybe sipping coffee at a quaint little café

Perhaps there is a new trade I could play
Anything would be better than waiting for wishes to obey
Is such a thing even still legal now a day?
And tell me, does "genie" look good on a résumé?

Don't get me started on some of the wishes I've heard in my day
Like the poor fool trying to win back the favor of his fiancée
And then blamed me when his plans were later in disarray
How could I have known, to another, she'd given her heart away?

Is it any wonder genies are known for causing their masters dismay?
And have a reputation for leading them astray?
Five minutes with some and you to would like to see them on flambé
How can we resist when their wishes leave so many areas gray?

But it seems from my point I stray
I should get back to it before, my part, I overplay
Your indulgence for a little while longer I pray
And I promise to get back to my point straightaway

A genie's life is not as the stories will portray
The real story is something I've been trying to relay
It's simply awful being stuck in a lamp all night and day
Not to mention how often someone has, my lamp, decided to "mislay"

On this matter I'd gladly be your attaché
But there is a rub at my lamp, a matter I must attend to right away

Shannon Wolff was born in Alaska and grew up in a little town called North Pole. This fact has lead every one of her relatives not familiar with Alaska, and complete strangers, to ask if she knows Santa Claus. She now resides in Cartersville, Georgia and is having mixed results with informing her new neighbors about her previous residence.
