  • Housecat
    by Shannon Wolff

    Ah, it's a housecat's life for me
Lying stretched out in the sun
    Knowing I won't be disturbed
At least not until my nap is done

I have my own scratching post
But like the sofa for sharpening my claws
And I have cat toys to play with
The kind that leaves catnip on my paws

I sleep most of the day
And about half of the night
And, while I may nibble on your fingers
    Don't worry, I won't bite

My time is mine to do as I please
I might warm my human's lap
Or I can play, or clean my fur
Though, most of the time, I just catnap

But don't go thinking I've got it too good
The household dog is a menace
Always sniffing and chasing me about
Then chewing on that ball made for tennis

Not to mention how often I'm picked up
And cuddled when I'd rather just be let be
But when I want attention it's no use
For then my human is too busy

    Though, for the most part
    The good outweighs the bad
And I know my human will love me
Even if I sometimes make her mad

Yes, you could say I have it made
I doubt I could do better if I were to try
You to could have this life of leisure
That is, if you were as lucky as I

This fact has lead every one of her relatives not familiar with Alaska, and complete strangers, to ask if she knows Santa Claus. She now resides in Cartersville, Georgia and is having mixed results with informing her new neighbors about her previous residence.
