  • Varuna's Waves
    by Michelle M. Mead

With her hands as soft as the lotus flower
she worshiped in the God Varuna's name
He the keeper of the souls that drowned
like with her own brother's burning flame
he's now resting on the dark side of the sun
and the angry mouth of the sea to blame

Her sari sash decorated by tongues of snakes
as Varuna's noose she wished to emulate
her golden necklaces hung long and wide
alas, his shining armor she couldn't replicate
but blue was the hue of her sari's fine silks
and on this color choice she didn't hesitate

Watching down upon every move of men
it is said the stars are his thousand eyed spies
beholding those whose darkness drives them
destructing true love with their endless lies
but her brother knew well both the wrath of Gods
and the cold death alive in the devil's disguise

His sister looked up into the celestial ocean
as Varuna dived clouds and then into the sea
riding on the back of the sea monster Makara
he took the lost souls back where they should be
into the western waters where he guards directions
and keeps the sea calm and free from impurities
