  • Elemental Rose
    by Robert William Shmigelsky

    Resting upon
    a barbed
    emerald stem
    stretching up
    from the ground,
    a crown of leafs
    arranged around
    elemental bonded
    symmetrical core
    of receptive cells
    sensitive to the light,
    changing element
    and color
    upon precise intervals
    of flaming disc
    above.
    At midnight,
    frozen blue shards
    glisten in the night,
    scents of tiding oceans,
    mountain springs
    seeping through the frozen ice.
    Six in the morning,
    ice melts,
    turning frozen blue shards
    to earth and grass,
    which in turn
    give off moist smells
of sands, dampened by pulling tides,
    brought up to faces
    now many years aged
    but eyes remembering
    old sights, and of
    early morning walks
    through scenic forest routes
    still wet from the dew.
    After drying, at noon,
    the grass ignites
    and bursts into flames,
    the soil underneath
    becoming its pitch.
Then, after radiating a hearth’s heat,
at six o’clock in the afternoon,
    the flames go out
    and elemental rose
    turns translucent,
    visible air stirring,
    bringing ocean breezes,
    spiraling blossom-filled drafts
    through flower patches,
    and all the other
    heavenly scents
    the wind
    can bring.

Robert William Shmigelsky , a residential care aide, is unapologetic in his pursuit of excellent high fantasy. Robert has been writing fantasy for himself in his spare time for the last seven years, but has only recently begun writing for others. Besides reading and writing, some of his hobbies include computers and medieval and ancient history. He has a dry sense of humor, which he blames his stepfather for. Also, he has a habit of making history jokes no one but he understands. Robert is currently sifting through the first of three novels and has a poetry collection entitled "Fragments Through Time" coming out through Diminuendo Press.
