  • Shango
    by Wakefield Mahon

I see the lightning split the evening sky
A white bolt divides the red heavens
I know he is with me
    They try to contain me
To make me one of them
He reminds me I am free
No matter what chains shackle my body
I dance to the rhythm of the Bata
I raise my double-bladed axe to the sky
    Bring me justice
    Remember me
The rain begins to pour down
    Washing away my anger
I see the mother of my children
She is the union of the Oba and the Oshun rivers
The spear of my zeal is redirected
    Lend us your strength
Help us in the ways of self-control
    Let us patiently endure
    Until we return to Olódůmarč
