single from the skies
to prepare a place among the branches.

Swift and secretive--
shadows under moonlight--
they scout the foliage for cover and prey.

No one knows how they choose.

Then comes the army--
a parliament of winged soldiers.

You hope the quarters are for peacetime.

Sarah Stasik lives on a crooked mountain in southwest Virginia. She enjoys watching the trees from her deck in the evening. Sometimes, she hears the owls scouting.
