When Frogs Callby C. B. Anderson
There came a piercing sound one soggy spring
that made us question what our lives were all
about, that made us gamble everything
we had to follow its seductive call
to places yet unseen. Despite the rain,
so many of us headed out on foot
that several cars made U-turns right on Main
Street, forced to take a detour. Let me put
it this way: Picture Exodus, but add
a Golden Horde plus others known on earth
for being predisposed to roam, all mad
for promised lands. You ponder, was it worth
it in the end? You bet it was. Here's why:
When I got near the clamor's teeming source
the water of the swamp reached past the thigh,
but it was warm -- from passion's flare, of course --
and straight-away I waded toward the crowd.
So children, when you wonder who your sire
is, ask yourselves, Whose voice still rings too loud?
and Who was first to join that noisy choir?
