  • Tears of the Nereid
    by Betsy A. Riley

    Braving the Master's spell
she surrenders her soul to the sea
    relinquishing life on land
    for the chance to seek
    beneath the waves

    Her heart is ever bound
to those who ride the surface
she weeps at their storm tossed fate
    but she cannot aid them
nor approach while they yet live

    Searching in the jade light
and dim shadows of the briny depths
    she combs the sandy shoals
    beneath the waves
    till the lost is found

    Tenderly she bears each body
    swiftly through the depths
    back to their home port
with a kiss on each pale face
she leaves them on the sand
